Cartier ID Two Concept Watch: Metal Need Not Apply

Jul 16, 2012

In the pursuit of achieving the world’s first high efficiency watch, Cartier announces their latest concept watch called the ID Two. This is a project that has gone under five years of research and development from 135 different engineers. This watch is a substantial movement forward compared to their last attempt on the ID One concept watch in late 2009.

Also like the ID One concept watch the ID Two watch are also just only a concept watch and will not be available for consumers to purchase. Much like concept vehicles, these are the concepts of the watchmakers to showcase their knowledge and ability of creating an aesthetically beautiful piece with exceptional movement and reliability that is ahead of its time.

The foundation of the research for the ID Two was to create a timepiece that was increasingly accurate, reliable and durable. In order to pursue the advancements of timepieces Cartier decided the first step was to find and replace today’s most common materials that make timepieces, metal.

Cartier did not eliminate metals completely form the ID Two but has much less than you would expect. The super innovative ID Two is housed in a 42mm Calibre style case that is made of Ceramyst. Ceramyst is a rocklike transparent polycrystalline ceramic. If thats not cool enough this case also doesn’t use any screws to hold it together. The case is vacuumed sealed, which means it is 99.5% air-free. According to Cartier the removal of air significantly reduces air friction and dramatically improves energy efficiency. Also by utilizing the vacuum seal along with a few new patents and fancy new materials allowed all lubricants and oils from the frictionless movements to be removed.

The limited amount of metals that are used contain mostly of titanium. But the titanium pieces are also DLC coated which make them stronger, darker and furthermore reduce friction. The ID Two does have some of the innovations from its predecessor. It encompasses the adjustment free escapement that was developed for the ID One by Cartier’s DRIE machining technology. This escapement utilized a feature where once it was put in the case, it no longer needed adjustments for accuracy. Other internal parts are made of what Cartier calls Carbon crystal which is technically silicon with a special process to coat with diamonds which also reduces more friction and makes silicon much more durable.

Another new advancements is the incredible 32 day power reserve between the double mainspring barrels. Typically mainsprings are made of metal but in order to advance in what metal only has to offer, Cartier decided to use fiberglass springs which is said to hold much more energy than metal. The amazingly long reserve power is the result of the combination of the fiberglass and high power efficiency movement. In fact, Cartier claims that the ID Two produces 30 % more power than standard watches and only uses half the energy.

The ID Two is truly an extraordinary level of achievement for Cartier. Their success in creating a product with such advancement is certainly a valid statement. And even though this certain model may not be available to purchase, this only goes to show the knowledge, skill, and power of execution that goes into their collections.
