What’s not to love about pearls? Their soft radiance, their assortment of colors, their timeless elegance . . . pearls are some of the most well-loved gemstones of all time. It comes as no surprise that some pearls have become nearly as iconic as the people that wore them, including Elizabeth Taylor’s La Peregrina pearl necklace, Audrey Hepburn’s pearls from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Anne Boleyn’s infamous pearl “B” choker. However, few pearls are as well known and as mysterious as those worn in the painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer.
Like most of Vermeer’s works, very little is known about this painting. It is estimated to have been created in 1665 in The Hague, Netherlands and it is unclear as to whether the work was a commission. This painting is frequently referred to as the “The Dutch Mona Lisa.”
Mikimoto, master producers of the cultured pearl, also see the allure in the famous Dutch masterpiece. Recently in collaboration with the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in the Netherlands, Mikimoto created a pair of pearl earrings inspired by “Girl with a Pearl Earring” to accompany the painting in a Masterpiece Exhibition. These earrings feature 16mm white South Sea pearls framed by a netting of 7 carats of bezel set diamonds in 18 karat white gold.
Only two pairs of these earrings have been created. One pair of earrings will go with the 48 piece exhibition of 17th and 18th century paintings, scheduled to visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum and the Kobe City Museum in Japan. The other pair of earrings will be displayed in Mikimoto’s flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo.
