At Watches and Wonders 2023, IWC has stolen the show with its rerelease of the line in the Ingenieur Automatic 40.
Mar 30, 2023Making its debut in 1955, the IWC Ingenieur set itself apart as a tool watch for scientists, doctors, and you guessed it…engineers. With its soft iron inner case, it was exceptionally resistant to magnetic fields given off by research and diagnostic equipment. In 1976, legendary watch designer Gerald Genta reimagined the Ingenieur for a far more industrial design with its integrated bracelet, bolted bezel, and textured dial.
Nearly 50 years later, the Ingenieur has returned to the forefront of IWC’s collection as its new flagship steel sports model. Though reintroduced in its historic 70’s Genta styling, the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is anything but dated. Its dial has been updated featuring a deeper gridded pattern for a more prominent texture. Not to mention, it comes in three stunning colors: white, black, and eye-catching aqua.
Beneath the dial lays IWC’s caliber 3211 automatic movement. Boasting a power reserve of 120 hours. This piece can go in your watch box and return to your wrist five days later with it still ticking, very impressive given the Ingenieur’s highly wearable case dimensions.
True to its name, the Ingenieur Automatic 40 comes with a case diameter of 40 millimeters, the industry standard today for full-size sports models. At a thickness of only 10.7mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of just under 46mm, the Ingenieur proves to be highly wearable for a variety of wrist sizes. Compared to the likes of Omega’s Aqua Terra in 41mm and Rolex’s Datejust 41, the new and improved Ingenieur will sit slightly lower and smaller on the wrist for a more comfortable wear.
As if the release of the Ingenieur in steel wasn’t enough, IWC has also made a limited offering in titanium. At nearly half the weight of its stainless-steel counterpart, this Ingenieur retains its modern yet versatile specifications with a tonal titanium dial.
