In light of Earth Day last Friday, many people are searching for new ways to become more environmentally conscious. But while investing in ways to lower the electricity bill or reduce water usage, did you ever consider how eco-friendly your jewelry might be? It’s something that a lot of major retailers and luxury jewelry designers are taking more into consideration.
“Conflict diamonds” have been a dominant concern in the jewelry industry for several years. Today diamonds purchase by U.S. retailers now go through a rigorous background checks concerning certificates of origin and authenticity. However, jewelry retailers are now changing the way the gold industry is handled as well. Ninety percent of gold mined today goes to the jewelry industry. There is currently an international campaign called “No Dirty Gold” that major luxury jewelry brands, such as Cartier, are joining in an attempt to encourage responsible gold sourcing in the jewelry industry at large. The “No Dirty Gold” campaign strives to change the way that gold is mined and processed in order to reduce the damaging environmental and community effects that mining operations can have.
London-based rock ‘n roll jewelry designer Stephen Webster also announced early this year that he intends to release a collection of fair-traded and fair-mined gold jewelry this year, mostly composed of wedding bands. Webster said, “Once we get started, we intend to quickly grow the volume of business we conduct using fair trade gold. One day, I want it to be 100 percent of the gold we sell.”
