The Most Notable Engagement Rings in History

Feb 14, 2020

A wedding ring means so much! Yes, it represents when a man loves a woman and wants to spend his life with that woman, but it also signifies a symbolic work of art signifying love, style and sophistication. Sometimes that love is lived out in the most public of ways making it more than just a sacred and intimate moment of matrimony. This list showcases some of those notable public displays of love and the rings that became just as iconic as the individual.

Princess Diana

Princess Diana chose her ring in 1981 from several shown to her. After Princess Diana’s death, William inherited a Cartier watch while Harry received the ring. Harry then decided to give the ring to William so the future queen could wear it. William proposed to Kate Middleton in Kenya with Princess Diana’s sapphire ring.

Jacqueline Bouvier

John Kennedy proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier on June 24, 1953 with a custom-made Van Cleef & Arpels engagement ring. This unique design features a 2.84 carat emerald and a 2.88 carat diamond with baguette accents. Later on, when Jackie became First Lady, she had the design changed replacing the baguettes with round diamonds. After the death of JFK, she had the ring restored to the original design.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were married on January 14, 1954. Marilyn’s ring was made of platinum and 35 baguette-cut diamonds in a channel style. She chose an eternity ring instead of the classic engagement ring.

Elizabeth Taylor

The Krupp Diamond given to Elizabeth Taylor by her 5th husband, Richard Burton. It is 33.19 carat stone and considered one of the world’s most flawless diamonds. She wore it in every film since it was given to her. In 1978, Taylor sold the ring and used the money to help build a hospital in Botswana, Africa.

Each of these rings possess a uniqueness that makes it stand out from the rest. It’s not so much as to who is wearing it or how big it may be, but the story behind what makes it so special.
