10 years following the achievement of creating the first true constant force escapement, Girard-Perregaux returns with the Neo Constant Escapement.
Jan 23, 2024Throughout the brand’s history, Girard Perregaux has developed several revolutionary movements including the Gyromatic HF, Universal Quartz Frequency, and the Constant Escapement. The Neo Constant Escapement watch adds to the brand’s outstanding tradition of innovative watch manufacturing.
A New Train of ThoughtThe idea for the constant escapement movement came to watchmaker Nicolas Dehon while he was riding the train. He realized that by bending his train ticket, there was a bi-stable system. When a transversal force is applied the card buckles into a “C” shape. He used this simple observation to accomplish one of the most impressive feats in watchmaking history – a constant force escapement movement.

Design and Technical RevolutionThe brand released its first constant escapement watch back in 2013 for which it was awarded the “Aiguille d’Or” at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) within the same year. One decade later, the Neo Constant Escapement shows various improvements and refinements compared to its award-winning predecessor.
You may be wondering, what are the differences in the 2013 and 2023 models? Let’s start with the size of the case which is now 45mm in comparison to 48mm. Crafted from Grade 5 Titanium, the case features a glass box sapphire crystal which provides a captivating view of the movement.
A closer look at the dial reveals that the Neo Constant Escapement maintains the iconic symmetrical patterns Girard Perregaux is renowned for, adorned with three neo-shaped bridges. Notably, the design has evolved, shifting from an off-centered sub-dial for hours and minutes to a centered display, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.
The movement of the 2023 model showcases notable improvements, featuring an increased use of silicium components for friction reduction and anti-magnetic properties. This refinement results in the Neo Constant Escapement now offering a minimum 7-day power reserve.
In this model, the star wheel is ingeniously coupled with a larger inertia wheel. The wheels, now smaller and asymmetrical, have been strategically designed to enhance the lever effect and the efficiency of the escapement, all while maintaining balance across various functions. The geometry and proportions of the locking lever have undergone meticulous reworking to create a self-starting mechanism for improved reliability and energy efficiency.
All of these improvements have increased time-keeping precision resulting in the prestigious COSC certification.
