Watch Spotlight: Jaquet Droz’s New Grande Seconde Tourbillon

Jaquet Droz introduces a new tourbillon model, the Grande Seconde Tourbillon. The classy and simple aesthetic of the signature figure 8 design emphasises the tourbillon movement that is nicely displayed in the dial. However there seems to be some irony in the name of this particular timepiece. The name does not reference the number of tourbillons made by Jaquet Droz but a reference to their signature model. The original collection of the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde also has the unique figure 8 design but the larger dial featured the seconds dial which was why it was named “Grande Seconde.” But in this tourbillon model, Jaquet Droz decided to place the tourbillon in the smaller dial that doubles as the seconds indicator which also makes it not so big any more. Although the seconds dial is no longer grande in size, this Grande Seconde Tourbillon still houses a pretty grande seconds dial movement.

The Grande Seconde Tourbillon is available in 18k white gold or a rose gold edition. Both housed in 43mm case, the white gold model has a slate colored dial with Geneva stripes while the rose gold model has a very clean and traditional white enamel finish for the dial. They covered with a sapphire crystal front and caseback to allow for the tourbillon movement to be seen and give a floating illusion. This watch is also powered by an automatic in-house caliber 25JD with a 18k rose gold rotor and has a power reserve for seven full days. The white gold and rose gold versions are both paired with black alligator leather strap. This being one of the most elegant and unique tourbillons that Jaquet Droz has ever created, choosing between the white gold and rose gold version may be quite difficult.
