The Essentials of Hoop Earrings

Dec 05, 2011

When it comes to accessories, few things are as ubiquitous as a pair of hoop earrings. They come in all shapes, sizes, and manners of decoration and there is not a situation in which this indispensable piece of jewelry cannot be worn. When nothing else seems to work, hoop earrings are the go-to pièce de résistance, which is why no jewelry collection is complete without a pair.

Types of Hoop Earrings
Classic Metal Hoops

The most classic hoop design that comes to mind are simple round wire hoops made of solid gold, sterling silver, or platinum and can be made to match anything. You can wear a small understated pair of hoops to give a classic touch to whatever you’re wearing or you can go all out and wear larger hoops that make a statement. Large hoop earrings are an excellent way to show off your cheekbones, but be aware that they will draw attention to your neck if that’s something you want to avoid. Also, be sure to make sure that larger hoops are as lightweight as possible so that they don’t put too much stress on your earlobes throughout the day. Hoops with hinged backs will be able to hold more weight securely as well.

Diamond Hoops

Diamond hoops are a simple way to add a little sparkle to your look. They are commonly set halfway around the outside of the hoop, but some may also have diamonds all the way around the outside of the hoop as well as the inside to maximize bling capacity. There are many sizes of diamond hoop earrings from the accented to the attention grabbing, to fit any style.

Hugging Hoops

These are hoop earrings that are short enough that they “hug” the earlobe. These earrings frequently feature gemstones and carved designs and an oval shape is the most popular. Since they are shorter and catch things less, huggie hoop earrings are more able to withstand daily wear. These hoops often have a hinged enclosure for easier wear.

Dangling Hoop Earrings

These earrings feature a hoop that dangles from another attachment such as a chain, other hoops, a French hook, or a stud. This style is a fresh take on the ever classic hoop earring and it gives more flexibility in regards to design.

Half Hoop Earrings

These hoop earrings have an open design. Instead of the earring having a continuous loop, the hoop instead has a C shape, with the open part of the earring facing to the back.
