Kwiat's story begins in 1907, when Polish immigrant Sam Kwiat opened a small diamond shop on Canal Street in Manhattan, then the heart of New York City's original diamond district. His son David joined the business in 1933 at just sixteen, developing a reputation for exceptional diamond cutting that led major houses like Harry Winston and Tiffany & Co. to seek out Kwiat-cut stones — including the celebrated 50-carat "Teardrop of Africa," which David cut from a 126-carat rough diamond in the 1960s. In 1962, Kwiat became one of the first diamond dealers to relocate to New York's 47th Street, now the internationally recognized Diamond District. David's sons, Sheldon and Lowell, joined the family business in the early 1970s, and by the early 2000s, Lowell's three sons — Greg, Russell, and Cory — had taken the helm as the fourth generation to lead Kwiat. In 2007, the company celebrated its centennial by opening its first retail flagship on Madison Avenue, followed in 2009 by the acquisition of Fred Leighton, the renowned antique and vintage jewelry house. Today, Kwiat remains privately owned by the Kwiat family and is recognized as the exclusive U.S. source for the ASHOKA® diamond — a rare, proprietary cut inspired by a legendary historic diamond — continuing more than a century of expertise in diamond cutting that began with Sam Kwiat's small shop on Canal Street.
