Glashütte Original's story begins in 1845, when Dresden watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange secured government backing to establish a precision watchmaking workshop in Glashütte, Saxony — training local apprentices and laying the foundation for what would become one of the world's most respected watchmaking regions. Lange, along with fellow watchmakers Moritz Grossmann, Julius Assmann, and Adolf Schneider, developed the techniques that still define Glashütte watchmaking today, including the three-quarter plate and hand-engraved balance cock. After World War II, Soviet occupation forces nationalized Glashütte's watch companies, ultimately merging them in 1951 into a single state-owned enterprise, VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, which continued producing mechanical watches throughout the Cold War even as Western watchmaking shifted toward quartz. Following German reunification, the company was privatized, and since 1994 has operated under the name Glashütte Original as a deliberate commitment to its historical roots. In 2000, Glashütte Original was acquired by the Swatch Group, providing the resources for renewed growth while preserving the brand's manufacturing independence and craftsmanship. In 2002, the company founded the Alfred Helwig School of Watchmaking — named for the Glashütte watchmaker who invented the flying tourbillon in 1921 — to train the next generation of watchmakers and ensure its traditions continue. Today, Glashütte Original remains one of the few manufacturers producing nearly all of its own components in-house, carrying forward 180 years of Saxon watchmaking heritage.
