Longines is a Swiss watchmaker founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. While Auguste Agassiz established the original company, it was his nephew Ernest Francillon who truly built Longines into what it is today — constructing its first factory in 1867 and giving the brand its name, taken from the local area "Les Longines." That same year, Longines produced its first in-house movement using crown winding and setting, a modern alternative to the key-wound watches of the era. Now part of the Swatch Group, Longines is known worldwide for its winged hourglass logo, registered in 1889 and recognized as the oldest unchanged trademark still in active use — a classical symbol of time's passage, not an aviation reference. The brand's reputation for precise sports watches and chronographs has made it a trusted partner to major sporting events for well over a century.

Longines was founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, when Auguste Agassiz joined a local watch trading office alongside two partners. The company as it's known today, however, was truly shaped by Agassiz's nephew, Ernest Francillon, who took over the business in the 1850s and transformed it from a scattered cottage industry into a modern, centralized watchmaking operation. In 1867, Francillon built the brand's first factory on a plot of land known locally as "Les Longines" ("the long meadows"), and adopted the name for the company itself. That same year, Longines produced its first in-house movement, the 20A — notable for using crown winding and setting rather than the older key-wound system still common at the time. To protect against counterfeiters capitalizing on the brand's growing reputation, Francillon trademarked the Longines name in 1880 and, in 1889, registered the now-iconic winged hourglass logo — a classical symbol representing the fleeting nature of time, unrelated to aviation. That trademark remains the oldest unchanged, actively registered logo with the World Intellectual Property Organization. By 1911, the Longines factory employed over 1,100 people and sold watches worldwide, having already built a reputation in sports timing — supplying equestrian officials in the U.S. as early as 1886 — that would later expand into aviation with watches like the 1931 Lindbergh Hour Angle. Since 1983, Longines has been part of the Swatch Group, continuing to operate from its original home in Saint-Imier.
