Gurhan is a fine jewelry brand founded in 1994 by Turkish designer Gurhan Orhan, credited with reviving the use of pure 24K gold in modern jewelry — a material most designers avoid for being too soft to work with. Using ancient goldsmithing techniques he taught himself, Gurhan heats and hand-hammers pure gold into its final form, creating the brand's signature textured, "fingerprint" finish. Gurhan Orhan's path to jewelry design was unconventional — before founding his namesake brand, he ran music venues in Turkey and restored antique pocket watches in Switzerland. In the early 1990s, he was handed a sheet of pure 24K gold, and the material's warmth and depth immediately captivated him. Local artisans warned him that pure gold was too soft and heavy for fine jewelry, but Gurhan spent months teaching himself the goldsmithing techniques of ancient Anatolian and Byzantine craftsmen, eventually developing his own method: heating gold until pliable, hand-hammering it to strengthen and texture it, then curing it in a low-temperature oven for up to 36 hours. He launched his first collection in 1994, selling it from a small shop in Bodrum, Turkey, before establishing a second base in New York City by 1997. His work quickly drew international recognition, including the World Gold Council's Grand Prize for Design for the New Millennium, a commission from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a devoted following among high-profile wearers including Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Angelina Jolie. Today, Gurhan continues to design and hand-hammer each piece himself, training the artisans in his Istanbul and New York workshops in the same techniques that launched the brand three decades ago.
