Louis Erard Information and FAQ

About Louis Erard Watches

Louis Erard is an independent Swiss brand that positions itself as a "gateway to independent horology." Unlike many brands that focus on mass-market quartz or generic designs, Louis Erard focuses exclusively on mechanical movements.

The brand is famous for its Regulator layout—where the hour, minute, and second hands are separated into different axes—and for its frequent collaborations with legendary watchmakers and artists like Vianney Halter, Alain Silberstein, and Konstantin Chaykin.

History of Louis Erard

1929: Founded by Louis Erard and André Perret in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, originally as a watchmaking school and case manufacturer.

1931: The brand produced its first watches under the Louis Erard name.

1950s–1980s: The company grew into a full-fledged manufacturer, even producing its own movements for a time. Like many Swiss brands, it struggled during the "Quartz Crisis."

1992–2003: The brand moved to Le Noirmont but eventually went dormant for nearly a decade.

2003–Present: Relaunched by private investors, the brand found a new identity. Under the leadership of Manuel Emch (who joined in 2019), Louis Erard has become a cult favorite for its limited-edition collaborations and artistic dials.

Louis Erard Collections

Excellence - The flagship line. It features the famous Le Régulateur and the Petite Seconde. This collection often showcases high-end crafts like Grand Feu enamel, hand-guilloché, and stone dials (lapis lazuli, malachite).

Noirmont (2340) - Named after the brand's home, this is their newest direction featuring integrated bracelets and more contemporary, "sport-chic" aesthetics.

La Sportive - A line of robust chronographs and sporty models designed for active lifestyles, typically featuring titanium or steel cases.

Collaborations - These are highly sought-after, limited-run pieces (often 178 units) created with world-renowned designers and independent watchmaking icons.

Can I change the strap on my Louis Erard?

Most Louis Erard models use standard lug widths and feature quick-release spring bars, allowing you to swap straps easily without tools. This is particularly popular with the Excellence and Noirmont collections to change the look from formal to casual.

What is a "Regulator" watch?

A Regulator is the hallmark of the Louis Erard brand. It is a dial layout where the hours, minutes, and seconds are separated into different sub-dials. Historically, "Regulator" clocks were the ultra-precise master clocks used by watchmaking workshops to set the time for all other pieces.
