G-SHOCK Information and FAQ
About G-SHOCK Watches
G-SHOCK is Casio's line of virtually indestructible watches, born from a single idea: build a watch that survives being dropped. Developed by Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe and launched in 1983 with the original DW-5000C, G-SHOCK was built around a "Triple 10" standard — able to survive a 10-meter drop, resist water to 10 bar, and run for 10 years on one battery. Today the line has grown to include rugged outdoor watches, tactical and diving models, and precision metal editions like the MR-G series, all built on the same shock-resistant engineering that made the original famous. King Jewelers carries G-SHOCK for customers who want a genuinely tough, versatile watch backed by decades of proven durability.
History of G-SHOCK
G-SHOCK began in 1981, when Casio designer Kikuo Ibe set out to build a watch that could survive being dropped, after a mechanical watch given to him by his father shattered on the pavement. Ibe assembled a small team, known internally as "Project Team Tough," and set an ambitious goal: a watch that could survive a 10-meter drop, resist water to 10 bar, and last 10 years on a single battery — the "Triple 10" concept. The team built and destroyed more than 200 prototypes, testing early designs by throwing them out of a third-floor bathroom window at Casio's research facility. The breakthrough came when Ibe watched a young girl bouncing a rubber ball in a park and realized the watch's delicate components could be protected the same way — suspended and "floating" inside a shock-absorbing case rather than rigidly armored. That idea became the foundation of the first G-SHOCK, the DW-5000C, released in April 1983. Since then, G-SHOCK has expanded well beyond its original rugged, resin-cased design, adding the Baby-G line in 1994, the precision metal MR-G series in 1996, and modern technology like solar charging, GPS, and Bluetooth — while remaining true to Ibe's original mission of building a watch that simply won't break.
