NOMOS Glashütte Information and FAQ
About NOMOS Glashütte Watches
NOMOS Glashütte is an independent German watch manufacturer founded in January 1990 by Roland Schwertner, just two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, in Glashütte — one of Germany's most storied watchmaking towns. From its first collection in 1992, NOMOS built its identity around clean, Bauhaus-inspired design, a striking contrast to the ornate styles common in luxury watchmaking. Since 2005, NOMOS has manufactured its watches almost entirely in-house, including its own proprietary escapement, the NOMOS swing system. Remaining independently owned, NOMOS has earned over 150 design awards for its minimalist aesthetic and genuine watchmaking craftsmanship. King Jewelers is proud to carry NOMOS Glashütte for collectors who appreciate understated design paired with real German horological substance.
History of NOMOS Glashütte
NOMOS Glashütte was founded in January 1990 by Roland Schwertner, a photographer and IT professional from Düsseldorf with no formal watchmaking background, just two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Schwertner chose to build his company in Glashütte, Saxony, a town with a watchmaking legacy dating back to the 1840s that had been nationalized and diminished under East German rule. In 1992, NOMOS launched its first collection — the Tangente, Orion, Ludwig, and Tetra — designed by Susanne Günther with a clean, minimalist aesthetic directly influenced by the Bauhaus movement, a striking departure from the bold, oversized watch styles of the era. For its first years, NOMOS relied on Swiss-sourced movements, but in April 2005 the brand switched entirely to in-house calibers, a major milestone toward true manufacture status. NOMOS continued investing in original engineering, spending seven years developing its own proprietary escapement, the NOMOS swing system, in partnership with the Technical University of Dresden, introduced in 2014. Unlike most other historic Glashütte watchmakers, which are now owned by large Swiss conglomerates like Richemont or the Swatch Group, NOMOS has remained independent, still guided by founder Roland Schwertner alongside CEO Uwe Ahrendt and Creative Director Judith Borowski. Today, NOMOS produces roughly 20,000 watches a year almost entirely within Glashütte, and has earned more than 150 design awards for its distinctive blend of Bauhaus minimalism and genuine German watchmaking.
