Montblanc is a German luxury house founded in 1906 in Hamburg, best known as the creator of the Meisterstück fountain pen — one of the most recognized writing instruments in the world. The brand's white star logo represents the snow-capped peak of Mont Blanc, the mountain that gave the company its name. While Montblanc built its reputation on fine writing instruments, it expanded into Swiss-made watches in 1997 through its dedicated watchmaking division in Le Locle, Switzerland, and today also produces leather goods, jewelry, and accessories. Montblanc was founded in 1906 in Hamburg, Germany, when banker Alfred Nehemias, engineer August Eberstein, and businessman Claus-Johannes Voss set out to build a better fountain pen. Their company, originally called Simplo Filler Pen Co., released its first pen, the Rouge et Noir, in 1909. In 1910, the company adopted the name Montblanc, inspired by the highest peak in the Alps, and in 1913 trademarked its now-iconic white star logo, representing the mountain's snow-capped summit. In 1924, Montblanc introduced its most celebrated product, the Meisterstück ("Masterpiece") fountain pen, which by 1929 carried the engraving "4810" — the height of Mont Blanc in meters — on every nib, a tradition that continues today. The brand expanded internationally through the 1920s and survived the disruption of World War II, during which its Hamburg factory was destroyed and later rebuilt. Montblanc entered the world of luxury watchmaking relatively recently, launching its first watch collection in 1997 and establishing a dedicated manufacture, Montblanc Montre S.A., in Le Locle, Switzerland — deepening its watchmaking credibility further in 2006 when parent company Richemont acquired the historic Swiss chronograph maker Minerva, founded in 1858, and folded it into Montblanc's watch division. Today, Montblanc remains part of the Richemont Group, continuing to produce its iconic pens in Hamburg alongside Swiss-made watches, leather goods, and jewelry.
