1939: A Request from Portugal
The IWC Portugieser began with an unusual request. In the late 1930s, two Portuguese watch merchants, Rodrigues and Teixeira, approached IWC seeking a wristwatch with the precision of a marine chronometer, the large, exacting instruments used for maritime navigation, at a time when the standard men's wristwatch measured just 33-35mm. To meet that demand, IWC fitted one of its most accurate pocket watch movements, Calibre 74, into an oversized wristwatch case, resulting in Reference 325. Only around 690 examples were produced between 1939 and the mid-1980s, making it a rare, largely forgotten watch for over half a century.

1993: The Jubilee Revival
The Portugieser might have remained a footnote in IWC's history if not for the brand's 125th anniversary in 1993. IWC revived Reference 325 as the Portugieser Jubilee (Ref. 5441), a limited run of 1,750 pieces (1,000 steel, 500 rose gold, 250 platinum), each powered by Calibre 9828, an evolution of the original pocket watch movement, specially engraved to mark the anniversary. This was the first time IWC officially gave the watch the "Portuguese" name, and the Jubilee is now considered the direct forefather of every modern Portugieser.

1995 — Portugieser Minute Repeater debuts (Ref. 5240), one of horology's most complex complications, in a run of 550

1998 — Portugieser Rattrapante Chronograph (Ref. 3712) launches, developed by watchmaker Richard Habring using a modified Valjoux 7750, becoming the first mass-produced split-seconds chronograph movement

1998 — Portugieser Chronograph (Ref. 3714) debuts, pairing the clean two-register dial with a 40.9mm case; it would go on to become one of IWC's best-selling watches of all time, worn by figures like Keith Richards

2000 — IWC introduces the in-house Calibre 5000, an ultra-efficient Pellaton-winding automatic movement delivering a remarkable 7-day power reserve, launched in the Portuguese 2000 and ushering in the modern era of the collection
