TUDOR Pelagos Information and FAQ
About TUDOR Pelagos
Introduced in 2012 alongside the Black Bay, the TUDOR Pelagos takes its name from the Greek word for "deep sea" and represents the brand's purely modern, no-nonsense approach to a professional dive watch. Unlike the vintage-inspired Black Bay, the Pelagos was built for the working diver from the ground up, and it became the first model in either the TUDOR or Rolex catalog to feature a full titanium case, a lightweight, corrosion-resistant material that remains central to the collection today.
The standard Pelagos is waterproof to 500 meters, powered since 2015 by TUDOR's in-house COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre MT5612 with a 70-hour power reserve, and finished with a matte titanium and steel case, a rotating dive bezel, and TUDOR's patented bracelet extension system for adjusting fit over a wetsuit. The collection has grown to include the Pelagos LHD ("Left Hand Drive"), a tribute to bespoke watches TUDOR built for left-handed French Navy divers in the 1970s with its winding crown positioned on the left side of the case; the more compact Pelagos 39, a 39mm titanium version with a 200-meter rating for everyday wearability; and the Pelagos FXD family, developed directly with French Navy combat swimmers for underwater navigation, featuring fixed strap bars and a single-piece fabric strap inspired by handmade straps historically used by French military divers.
King Jewelers is an authorized TUDOR watch retailer in Nashville, carrying a range of Pelagos models including the standard Pelagos in black and blue dials, the Pelagos LHD, the Pelagos 39, and the Pelagos FXD in Chrono and GMT configurations. Every TUDOR watch purchase includes free shipping, and our team can help you compare Pelagos sizes and configurations in person at our Green Hills showroom in Nashville or online at kingjewelers.com.
History of TUDOR Pelagos
Origins: TUDOR's Answer to Rolex's Sea-Dweller
The TUDOR Pelagos launched in 2012 alongside the original modern Black Bay, but where the Black Bay leaned into vintage design cues, the Pelagos was built as a purely modern, no-compromise professional dive watch, TUDOR's equivalent to how the Rolex Sea-Dweller stands as the Submariner's deeper, more technical sibling. Named after the Greek word for "deep sea," the Pelagos wasn't a tribute to a specific vintage reference; it was a ground-up instrument built for real saturation diving, rated to 500 meters with a full titanium case and bracelet, marking the first time either TUDOR or Rolex had used titanium in a production watch case.
That decision to build in titanium wasn't cosmetic. Titanium is roughly 40% lighter than steel and highly corrosion-resistant, making it genuinely better suited to the demands of professional and saturation divers than either brand's traditional steel Oyster cases. The original 2012 Pelagos used a modified ETA movement, but TUDOR replaced it in 2015 with its first in-house COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre MT5612, offering a substantial 70-hour power reserve, and that upgrade earned the Pelagos the "Sports Watch" prize at the 2015 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
A Deeper Connection to the French Navy
The Pelagos' roots run alongside TUDOR's long-standing relationship with the French Navy's Marine Nationale, which began issuing TUDOR watches to its divers as early as 1956 and continued using them for decades of real underwater missions. That relationship directly shaped later additions to the family: the Pelagos LHD ("Left Hand Drive"), introduced in 2016, pays tribute to bespoke watches TUDOR built for left-handed French Navy divers in the 1970s, positioning the crown on the left side of the case so it can be worn comfortably on the right wrist. The Pelagos FXD, introduced in 2021, was developed directly with a specialized French Navy combat swimmer unit for underwater navigation, featuring fixed strap bars (FXD stands for "fixed") and a single-piece fabric strap inspired by handmade straps French military divers historically fashioned themselves.

What Defines a Pelagos Today
Across the family, the Pelagos maintains a consistently modern, technical identity: titanium construction (with some FXD models in carbon composite), a matte finish, a ceramic-disc rotating bezel with luminous markers for low-visibility reading, and TUDOR's patented bracelet extension system for adjusting fit over a wetsuit. Nearly every current model runs on an in-house COSC-certified movement with a silicon balance spring and 70-hour power reserve, the notable exception being the compact Pelagos 39, which trades depth rating and the helium escape valve for everyday wearability at 200 meters.
